For the first time since leaving the Arizona Wildcats in 2000, Dick Tomey will coach a football game in Tucson.
by Arizona Daily Star on Jan. 5, 2012, under Arizona football

For the first time since leaving the Arizona Wildcats in 2000, Dick Tomey will coach a football game in Tucson.
The winningest coach in UA history will assist Pat Hill in the Jan. 16 Casino del Sol College All-Star Game, officials said Wednesday.
Hill and Tomey will coach the "Stripes" against a "Stars" team run by former Arkansas and Mississippi coach Houston Nutt. Four local coaches - Tucson High School's Justin Argraves, Sahuarita's David Rodriguez, Pima College's Pat Nugent and longtime high school and Pima coach Jeff Scurran - also will assist the head coaches.
Tomey said Wednesday he's looking forward to working with Hill, who served as Arizona's offensive line coach and offensive coordinator in 1990 and 1991 before later coaching Fresno State, and reconnecting with old friends in his onetime home. Tomey is a frequent visitor to Arizona but mostly stays in Scottsdale, near his son Rich and grandchildren.
"We're excited about this game, and it's a good excuse to come to Tucson," Dick Tomey said.
The Casino del Sol College All-Star Game, formerly known as the Blue-Gray Game and the Eastham Energy All-Star Classic, will pit 90 college seniors against each other in a showcase for NFL scouts. Fox Sports Arizona will carry the game regionally.
The Jan. 16 game is a homecoming for the 73-year-old Tomey, who spent 29 seasons as head coach at Hawaii (1977-86), Arizona (1987-2000) and San Jose State (2005-09). He returned in 2011 as Hawaii's special teams coach, but was dismissed when head coach Greg McMackin was fired.
Tomey will not be retained by McMackin's replacement, Norm Chow.
"We understand that's part of the game," Tomey said. "Not many staffs want to inherit a 73-year-old coach, particularly one that was the former head coach."
He stopped short of announcing his retirement - "I've retired three times or something," he said with a laugh - but admitted coaching opportunities will be few and far between.
Tomey plans to travel stateside and internationally with his wife, author Nanci Kincaid, and do some public speaking and broadcasting.
The Jan. 16 game will mark a return - and a new start.
"It's going to be a great time for us," Tomey said.

Legendary University of Arizona football coach Dick Tomey is returning to Tucson for the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game. Tomey, who spent this season as the special teams coordinator at the University of Hawaii, is joining the coaching staff of the Stripes team. The Stripes head coach Pat Hill worked underneath Tomey from 1990-1991 as Arizona’s offensive coordinator.
“In 39 years of coaching, Dick Tomey is one of the best people I’ve ever been around,” said Hill. “He taught me a lot about people skills and I’m looking forward to seeing him.”
Tomey was the head coach at Arizona from 1987-2000. He also led San Jose State from 2005-2009. He won Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1992 while with the Wildcats. Arizona finished with a 12-1 record in 1998 under Tomey’s leadership and was ranked fourth in the AP Poll, the best post season ranking in school history. Tomey’s career NCAA record is 183-145-7. Tomey, and all other Casino Del Sol All-Star Game coaches, will be available to the media after practices beginning Wednesday, January 11th at the Kino Sports Complex. The full practice schedule will be released in the next 48 hours.
Another coaching legend with University of Arizona ties, Ron McBride, has been added to the coaching staff of the Casino Del Sol College Football All-Star Game. McBride recently retired as the head coach of Weber State, capping off a 50-year career in coaching. McBride is best known for his 13-season stint as the head coach of the University of Utah and also spent three seasons at Arizona in the late 80s as a member of Tomey’s coaching staff.
The Casino Del Sol All-Star Game has also invited Tucson-area high school and community college coaches to join the Stars and Stripes teams on the sidelines. Justin Argraves of Tucson High School, Patrick Nugent of Pima Community College, David Rodriguez of Sahuarita High School and Jeff Scurran, the former Pima Community College coach, Team USA coach and Arizona High School Coach of the Year, are all joining the staffs for the game. Scurran had a very successful coaching career as the head coach of Sabino HS and Palo Verde HS. Argraves was named the Arizona Cardinals High School Coach of the Year in 2011.
“It is great to have these local coaches involved. They do a great job of teaching young athletes in Tucson,” said Mike Feder, Vice President and General Manager of the Tucson Padres, who are operating the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game. “The high school and community college coaches are all worthy of being part of this big event.”
The Casino Del Sol All-Star Game is will be played at Kino Stadium in Tucson and will feature more than 90 of the nation’s best college football players. The rosters will feature players from nationally known schools like Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
